A study on the professional publisher and the basics of the publishing industry
The Arab Publishers` Association published a study entitled: "The Professional Publisher... Basic Approaches to the Publishing Industry", answers several questions, including: What is the publishing industry? Is there a publishing industry in the Arab region? What are the elements of a professional publisher in the Arabic concept? And who is a professional publisher? And what are the tools of his work? Are there clear criteria for publication? What are the new publishing spaces?
The study, prepared by Dr. Khaled Azab, deals with a number of topics accompanied by numbers and analysis, including: writers and the publishing movement in the world. Analytical vision, book sales scientifically during five years (2017-2022), interactive book and digital publishing conditions, audio books, children's book, book and education, publishing house styles, book marketing, book cover, publishing industry, author and ChatGPT technology.
The study monitored the reasons that led to the decline of the Arab publishing movement, especially the printing and publication of the paper educational book, the shift to the digital publishing space, and the rapid developments that accompanied this, and the lack of clear policies for publishing standards.
Also, the continuous relationship between the author, publisher and reader, and the question about the economics of publishing in light of the burdens posed by publishing inputs, and these inputs are distributed between paper, inks and software, to import them all from outside the region, and the customs duties and taxes imposed on them lead to a continuous rise in their material cost.
The study pointed to the importance of the publisher's trademark, and the rights accruing to him during and after the publishing process, and many Arab publishing houses were closed and lost the copyrights to hundreds of their titles, without offering or transferring these rights to another publisher.
The study emphasized the intellectual property rights of the publisher and author, the construction and availability of content, images and their rights, artificial intelligence and intellectual property rights, wasted rights, used books, book rarities, and standards for managing publishing houses.
The Arab Publishers` Association stressed that the study comes in light of the technical developments that represent a boom in the publishing industry, at a time when the Arab book is facing a new challenge that hesitates between digital and paper, the traditional publisher who has maintained his professional traditions for decades, needs continuous technical support, in order to keep pace with the current of rapid changes, and can interact with him without being swept away from the publishing field. The Association added: Hence, this study came to present some of what we will go to in the future in the Arab Publishers` Association, as we will try hard to bridge many gaps between the publisher and the digital space and its data.
